Rafael Correa stregthened relation with Qatar and presented the "SUCRE" in Geneva

Madrid, October 26th.- The president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, strengthened this week the political and economic relations with Qatar and presented to scholars in Geneva the new financial architecture, whose axis is the Unified System for Regional Compensation (SUCRE).

In an interview with Efe during a visit of a few hours to Madrid, Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño mentioned some of the aspects of the trip this week by Correa to Qatar and Geneva. "Two visits with a totally different character," he said.

In the political arena, the Amir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, "appreciated" the position of Ecuador on Palestine and the Gaza Strip rejection by the "permanent aggression" suffering that territory, according to Patiño, who accompanied Correa on the tour.

"We are searching, like most of the world's people, not just the governments, to have peace and not to continue having so much death and violation of human rights and much sacrifice," said Ecuadorian Foreign Minister about the Palestinian situation.

In the economic field, the possibility of investment in Ecuador was analyzed, as Qatar has an "extraordinary liquidity", according to the minister, he said "they have the funding and have nowhere to invest and we have nowhere to invest and we need funding.

"The emir of Qatar expressed his desire, interest and confidence in Ecuador to make these investments," the Chancellor said that there is already Qatari investments in Ecuador's oil sector and on this trip investors also expressed interest in the gas .

Qatar also imports 90% of agricultural products consumed, area in which Ecuador can find business opportunities, Patiño who said that 16 Ecuadorian businessmen were part of the delegation accompanying Correa said.

For the chancellor the highlight was the topic on education and scholarships for Ecuadorians in Qatar. "The most important thing for the future of Ecuador is the formation of human talent," he said.

In Geneva, Correa delivered a lecture at the fifteenth edition of the Chair Raul Prebisch and in the Institute of International and Development Studies, where he presented his ideas of the new regional financial structure.

Correa "argued that Latin America is returning to think with they own head, walk with their own feet (...) it is very important for a region that now looks globalization in a different way," Patiño said.

The SUCRE, which according to Patiño is already being use by ALBA countries in their trade, seeks to prevent "the use of non-regional currencies," such as the dollar, and is one of the pillars of the regional financial architecture, which also includes the creation of the El Banco de Sur and a reserve fund.

The intention is to build an "alternative" to an "international financial system that has failed so miserably (...), especially deteriorating the southern economies," Patiño said.
